Introduction

The Division of Research and Extension was established in 1987 and is mandated by the University to manage, co-ordinate, promote and facilitate research and extension. It is through these activities that new knowledge is generated, packaged and disseminated to a wide variety of end-users in fulfillment of the primary objective of the University. It is headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor ? Research and Extension.
Goals

• To engage in priority areas of research and consultancy.
• Disseminate research findings to the scientific and industrial communities.
• Develop appropriate technological innovations towards industrial development.
• Productively participate in priority extension and outreach activities.
• Promote and facilitate partnerships, networking, and collaborations with other institutions, industry and organizations.

Objectives

To harness, develop and expand available technical and human resources through research and extension activities for development.

• To create a structure and operational system conducive for gathering effective research and outreach delivery programs.
• To offer opportunity and increase involvement of the teaching staff in short-term training, research, extension, dissemination, production and publication of educational materials, articles and national assignments
• To inform curriculum development and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
• To promote and further national and international research development.
• To internalize institutes that encourage research, extension, consultancy at national and international level.
• To document research results, and facilitate in translating them into marketable products.

RESPONSIBILTY
The Division is charged with the responsibility of administering research and extension programmes, including:University funded research by academic staff

• Donor funded research by academic staff
• Postgraduate students research funds
• Establishing institutional, organizational and industrial linkages

COMMITTEES
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is the chairperson of the following Senate committees which facilitate Research and Extension activities:

•  The Research Committee
•  The Extension Committee
•  The Publications Committee
•  The Staff Appointment Committee for research  fellows

Personnel

The Division is headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (R & E).  The Director   (R & E) handles the research activities with the help of Senior Assistant Registrar and two Administrative Assistants. The University Industry Liaison Officer handles the extension, linkages, and collaboration.  The Research Account section is in charge of research funds in the Division.

Research Capacity

The University has highly trained staff involved in research. In addition postgraduate students contribute significantly to the University's research efforts.

RESEARCH DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS
The Division has documentations on Intellectual Policy Rights, Research Policy, Egerton Journals of (Science and Technology and Humanities Series)

CONFERENCES, SEMINARS, AND WORKSHOPS
The Division holds conferences, seminars and workshops for disseminating research findings.  There has been trainings for different faculties in the Division.  Research projects come out of the fundable proposals written by researchers.  The Division organizes research and consultancy training for staff within and without the University.  The Division has held proposal writing workshops, seminars and conferences.

Research Week and International Conference: This is held annually.  The Division invites researchers from all over the world.
Research Dissemination Seminars are also fora for research findings.  Seminars form avenues for researchers and postgraduate students to promote research dialogue and exchange aimed at strengthening research capacity in the University. Each faculty in the University is expected to hold a one day seminar within a year.

Research Proposal Writing: In order to be proficient in research proposal writing, the Division trains staff on how to write fundable research proposal.  The staffs are drawn from all the faculties of the university.   Due to this training, increased number of proposals has been experienced.
