Introduction

The recent trends of globalisation and liberalisation for local and international economics, both public and private sectors require human resource with appropriate knowledge and skills necessary for efficient and effective planning, development and management in competitive changing economic environments..  The goal of the Faculty is to prepare students with a wide range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes to respond to their need for effective management of public and private business enterprises.

The Faculty offers programs that lay emphasis on the functional areas of Commerce, and stress on problem solving, computer skills, management information systems and managerial business analysis.  The Faculty offers its programs at the Egerton Main and Nakuru Town Campuses in the following areas

  • Accounting,
  • Marketing
  • Banking and Finance
  • Insurance and Risk Management
  • Co-operative Management
  • Human Resource Management, and Management Science

Among the programs offered are: Bachelor of Commerce, Master of Business Administration and Master of Human Resource Management

The programs are taught by highly competent lecturers and the ongoing expansion of facilities will guarantee one of the best equipped University in the region. The big numbers of graduates already employed in most institutions within the country and overseas is a testimony that the quality we give is one of the best. The location of the University within Nakuru (one of the least expensive towns in the country) coupled with the fact that we offer the most competitive fees structure makes these programs the most attractive in the region.

Mission

The mission of the Faculty is to produce highly competent managers, accountants, financial analysts, bankers, marketers, business information

The Faculty will achieve this by: providing a rigorous and critical grounding in key generic areas of management; enhancing self-confidence and the ability to evaluate practical business experience from an academic, practical and a critical perspective; developing awareness of the changing local and international business environment; providing specialised knowledge relevant to current business world; instilling a professional and problem-solving attitude in the practice of management; providing an opportunity to the student for study in depth and breadth the theoretical and practical implications of.  ordinary and extraordinary management in various environmental settings, and; developing the essential skills and knowledge to deal with quality, change and employment issues facing contemporary organisations.

Admissions

To be admitted to the regular degree programme of Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) an applicant must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Egerton University which currently is a C+. In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut-off points for the year.

To be admitted to the self-sponsored B.Com program a Candidate must obtain at least a C grade in mathematics.  Those with less than a C grade must take and pass a bridging course in the respective subject. Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognised by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
Admission may be offered to CPA II and outstanding diploma holders in Co-operative Management, Banking, Finance, Agri-Business, Marketing, Insurance and Risk Management and Management Science disciplines passed with a credit or higher or their equivalent..  Such cases will be treated on individual merit..  Based on Senate approved guidelines, candidates may be allowed to transfer credits from a diploma course or its equivalent from an institution recognised by the University Senate up to a maximum of 30% of the required programme.

The Bachelor of Commerce degree programme takes four academic years for full-time students. Part-time students may be allowed to cover the programme within eight academic years.
