1.0 Introduction
The Bachelor of Education (Science) Programme is for the Science Teacher Education. This Programme was established at Egerton University in response to the continued need for qualified graduate science teachers in secondary schools and tertiary institutions. This programme is planned in line with the requirements of the current secondary school curriculum. The programme is practical oriented in nature, in keeping with the practical and vocational thrust of the current educational system. The programme leads to the Bachelor of Education (Science) degree of Egerton University.
2.0 Justification
The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme prepares qualified science teachers for secondary schools, colleges and tertiary institutions. There is need to replace retiring teachers and fill the gap due to natural attrition. That the Secondary Education will be subsidised by the government, the increased enrolment will demand greater number of teachers. That is the more why this programme important.
Â
3.0 Objectives
The general objectives of the programme are:
3.1 To prepare teacher for an active career in all facets of professional education
3.2 To develop the intellectual, professional and social characteristics of teachers to enable them to become responsible leaders within the school and the community.
3.3 To develop the capacity of the teachers so that they should be able to:
- teach effectively at the secondary school, colleges and tertiary levels
- identify research problems and design appropriate procedures for investigating and analysing them.
3.4 To provide a basis for science education training that enables the teachers to pursue advanced training in both professional and academic areas.
4.0 Admission Requirement
Candidates admitted to the Degree of Bachelor of Education (Science) must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of the Egerton University. They must also satisfy departmental requirements before registering for courses in the respective departments. In satisfying the minimum entrance requirements of the University, candidates must have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with the minimum grades against each subject as indicated below:
C+ in Mathematics
C+ in any of the following:
(i) Physics
(ii) Chemistry
(iii) Biology
(iv) Geography
or
B- in any of the following subjects:
- Physical Sciences
- Biological sciences
Â
Alternatively, admission may be granted to holders of Diploma/S1 certificate in science education from Institutions recognised by Egerton University provided the diplomas are at credits and above.
Â
5.0 Loading and Duration of Study
The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme draws its academic subjects from Faculty of Science. Students may take two teaching subjects from the following areas:
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Botany/Zoology
- Geography
The Faculty of Education and Community Studies offers Professional courses for the programme including:-
- Educational Foundations;
- Educational Administration, Planning and Economics;
- Educational Psychology and Counselling, and
- Curriculum and Instruction.
The B.Ed (Science) Programme normally takes a minimum Period of four academic years. Each academic year consists of two Semesters. In addition, the students shall take twelve weeks of Teaching Practice during which they shall also carry out a project in one of their teaching subjects. The minimum CFs for the Progamme shall be 144 CFs.
Â
6.0 Course Coding
The Course code shall be designated as follows:
EDCI stands for Education, Curriculum & Instruction.
EAPE stands for Education, Administration, Planning & Economics.
First digit indicates level or year the course is offered.
Second digit indicates nature or sub-discipline, interpreted as follows:
EDCI Courses:
- Curriculum
- Principles of Teaching
- Subject Methods
- Project /Seminar /Teaching Practice
Â
EAPE Courses:
1. Education Administration & Management.
- Economics and Planning of Education.
Third digit indicates the level at which the course is being taken.
Â
7.0 Examination
7.1 All the university examination rules and regulations shall apply for the B.Ed (science) degree.
7.2 In addition, the following examination rules and regulations shall apply:
(i) Teaching Practice
Individual classroom observation during Teaching Practice will be marked out of 100%. The final grade will be an average of all observations made by different supervisors. Teaching Practice work will be graded from A?F.
(ii) Learning Resources Project
This will be assessed as follows:-
Proposal = 25%
Actual Display = 50%
Report = 25%
