Introduction
Parasitology forms the scientific basis of clinical medicine in human and veterinary science being an integrative, multidisciplinary science. More than any other field, Parasitology incorporates knowledge and findings from molecular biology, cell biology. Immunology, physiology, endocrinology, molecular genetics, pathology and other disciplines to develop a comprehensive understanding of the whole organism .This programme therefore aims to prepare candidates from tertiary institutions and lower qualifications graduates to have indepth scientific knowledge in Parasitology for postgraduate studies.
Justification
This programme being a Pre- Master course will ultimately lead to the Masters of Science degree in Medical Parasitology for Higher National Diploma (HND) holders from National polytechnics and other equivalent institutions including also BSc graduates with lower qualifications from various universities.
Objectives
The Pre- MSc course in Medical Parasitology intends to:
Develop and upgrade skills and concepts necessary to undertake an MSc in Medical Parasitology.
Impart knowledge, attitudes and skills requisite in understanding the application of Parasitology principles and strategies in sustainable scientific, industrial and technological development.
Admission
Candidates who seek admission to this course must have passed Higher National Diploma in Medical Technology and related subjects or lower B. Sc. qualifications than the stipulated minimum of upper second class honours. The programme is open to employer-sponsored or self-employed applicants with a working experience of at least 2 years.

A candidate who fails the resit examination shall be discontinued.
A candidate who fails in more than 25% of the total CFs taken at the end of the course shall be discontinued.
Course Coding
The courses are coded as follows: The acronym PMEPA refers to Pre Masters in Medical Parasitology and is followed by three digits.
Digit 1 indicates the semester the course is offered or level of the course
Digit 2 indicates nature or sub discipline of the course within the discipline and interpreted according to the following levels:
Level 0 - General course
Level 1 - Cell biology
Level 2 - Physiology
Level 3 - Parasitology
Level 4 - Laboratory management and practice
Level 5- Entomology
Level 6- Epidemiology
Level 7- Research methods
Level 8- Immunology
Level 9- Medical law and Bioethics
Digit 3 indicates the serial number of individual courses within a particular sub- discipline within the discipline.
MSC Programme
The student should maintain a grade B average to be allowed to register for the MSc. programme.
